The makeup of local boards of elections has changed after a change by the North Carolina General Assembly.
That’s true for Burke County Board of Elections.
Senate Bill 382 removed the state governor’s power to make appointments to the Utilities Commission and the State Board of Elections. Then-Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed the bill but the legislature over-rode the veto in December 2024.
The bill changed election boards appointment powers from the governor to the state auditor, who is currently Dave Boliek, a Republican. Boliek recently appointed the chairpersons to all 100 county boards of elections in the state. The state board of elections made appointments to the county boards.
Previously boards of elections were made up of three Democrats and two Republicans, with the majority party being that of the governor.
Now, boards are made up of three Republicans and two Democrats.
The Burke County Board of Elections members will be sworn into office at noon Tuesday, said Kenny Rhyne, director of elections for Burke County.
The board members are Chairman Anthony S. Iovino (Republican), and members Beverly F. Carlton (Democrat), Rhonda L. Dautrich (Republican), Linda C. Walker (Democrat) and Donna B. Wojcik (Republican).
