A grieving mother said her son, who was shot and killed by a Newton police officer in June, was a car and motorcycle enthusiast who loved his family.
Melissa Childers, of Stanley, is the mother of 21-year-old Camden Skyler Childers. Camden Childers was shot and killed by Newton Police Lt. Carlos Alverto Uribe on June 26, according to court documents. “Not only did he (Uribe) ruin my family, he didn’t think about his own family,†Melissa Childers said. “He has a wife that’s going to have to raise kids by herself, but at least her children, his children, will still be able to come see him behind bars. My child is in an urn.â€
Uribe, 28, of Conover, is charged with second-degree murder in Camden Childers’ death. He was indicted on the charge on July 21. Uribe was fired from the Newton Police Department on Tuesday, Newton Police Chief Vidal Sipe said on Wednesday.

Uribe had his first administrative hearing in Catawba Superior Court on Wednesday. His next court date is Nov. 17. He is out of jail on bond.
Melissa Childers was joined by more than a dozen friends and family members in Catawba County Superior Court on Wednesday afternoon. Childers’ supporters wore matching light gray T-shirts with Camden Childers’ face emblazoned on the front and a red sports car printed on the back.
“This is my firstborn, and I need to get justice for him,†Melissa Childers said. “And that’s where that strength comes from. It’s for him.â€

During the hearing, Assistant District Attorney Kyle Smith filed a motion to return Camden Childers’ cellphone, keys and personal identification back to his family. Smith said all evidence from the prosecution has been given to Uribe and defense attorney Michael Neece. The evidence included 600 pages of documentation, interviews and body camera footage, Smith said.
Camden Childers was shot shortly after midnight on June 26. Catawba County Chief Assistant District Attorney Timothy Gould said previously that Childers was unarmed when officers stopped his motorcycle in a cul-de-sac on Northern Drive Northeast in Conover following three separate vehicle chases. Gould said Uribe kicked Childers to the ground and then shot him in the chest.
Camden Childers died a short time later in a hospital. Melissa Childers said law enforcement officers knocked on her door at about 4 a.m. to deliver the news. Melissa Childers said Wednesday was her first time seeing Uribe in person. “It was very hard,†she said.
Melissa Childers was joined by attorney Eric Doggett of the Pittman Agner law firm. Doggett said the family intends to file a lawsuit regarding Camden Childers’ death. Doggett declined to provide any details about the possible lawsuit or a timeline of when the suit may be filed.

“What we will say is that the grand jury reviewed the evidence and found probable cause to indict him (Uribe) for second-degree murder,†Doggett said. “That’ll play out in the court system. It is undisputed that he (Uribe) killed her (Melissa Childers’) son, and whether or not that’s murder or something else is for a jury to decide.â€
Uribe is innocent of second-degree murder unless proven guilty in a court of law.
