A new brewery is planning to open soon in downtown Newton.
Brookrise Brewing is planning a soft opening on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the site of a former firehouse that was turned into a brewery.
Shane Vine is leading the new brewery. Vine, a Charlotte native, has experience as a brewer in Texas and Colorado, he said.

Vine took over the space at 116 W. A St., which was previously used by D9 Brewing and other collaborators known under the collective Community Brewing Ventures and later Bevana.
The opening of that brewery and taproom was celebrated in 2021, but Cornelius-based D9 filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and the taproom closed, leaving a space primed for a brewery.
Vine, who was not associated with D9, thinks Brookrise is poised to be successful. Vine said he has been working toward opening Brookrise since August 2024.

“We want to be what the city of Newton originally wanted for this space,†Vine said. “It’s not just for Newton, but for this area as a whole.â€
Vine said he and co-owners of the brewery have been eager to open since the beginning of July and decided to set the soft opening for Aug. 9 as long as everything goes to plan.
Vine described Brookrise as an “outdoorsy brewery.†He and others involved in the project, like Craig Cannella, enjoy the outdoors and hope to create beer that people can “drink on top of a mountain or enjoy by a stream,†Vine said.
Brookrise will initially produce five beers, but Vine has plans to grow. The facility has 16 30-barrel fermenters that will allow Vine to make a variety of beers.
Vine is eager to brew and experiment with different recipes. “All work and no play makes a brewer a boring boy,†he said.
Vine said he is particular about the beer he makes. If he brews something and it does not meet his standards, “it’s going down the drain.â€
Brookrise will open its doors with a Mexican lager, West Coast IPA, New Zealand Pilsner and a golden summer ale called Carolina Sunshine, which will also be available with orange extract.
Vine said he considers Carolina Sunshine to be the brewery’s flagship beer.
“When people hear someone say, ‘I’m going to get some Carolina Sunshine,’ they’ll know what you’re talking about,†Vine said.
In addition to beer, Vine said Brookrise will sell snacks, soft drinks and hemp-infused seltzers.

Brookrise Brewing plans to be open Saturday from noon to about 8 p.m. The brewery expects to be open Sunday as well. The brewery will announce future hours after its opening weekend, Vine said.
The brewery has indoor space for about 40 people and will expand for more seating in the coming weeks. Seating will also be available outside.
