White smoke poured from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and the great bells of St. Peter's Basilica tolled Thursday after cardinals elected the 267th pope to lead the Catholic Church on the second day of their conclave.
PEORIA — Local Catholic faith leaders greeted with enthusiasm the election of the first pope from the United States — and from Illinois.Â

Both Peoria Bishop Louis Tylka and Springfield Bishop Thomas John Paprocki issued celebratory statements shortly after news broke Thursday. Neither has personally met Robert Prevost, the Chicago-born missionary who took the name Leo XIV.Â
"In this moment of great significance for the Church and the world, we were grateful for the guidance of the Holy Spirit who led the cardinals in their sacred task," Tylka said in a statement Thursday afternoon.Â
Tylka said the Diocese of Peoria welcomed the news "with hearts full of joy and hope," pledging to pray for the new leader's success.Â
“United with the universal Church, we are ready to walk in faith alongside our new Holy Father, trusting in God's providence and grace," he said.Â
Paprocki, of the Diocese of Springfield, offered similar sentiments, adding that the appointment of a fellow Chicagoan "brings extra joy to me."Â
“This moment fills the hearts of the faithful with renewed hope, as the Church receives a new Vicar of Christ, a shepherd to lead us in truth, charity, and love. We give thanks for Pope Leo XIV’s humble acceptance of this sacred responsibility," Paprocki said.Â
Like Tylka, Paprocki called on the faithful to support the new pope with prayers to strengthen his wisdom, courage and compassion.Â
Thomas Paprocki
"Let us also pray that under his leadership, the Church will continue to be a beacon of light in a world overshadowed by confusion, hatred, and violence," Paprocki said.
"May he inspire within us a deeper commitment to the holy Eucharist, prayer, and the Gospel message, and spark greater unity in our world and a renewed zeal for evangelization and to become an authentic disciple of Christ."
